Stone Highland Golf and Resort
About
Stunning new course with severe elevation changes and great views
Attractively set in a mountainous area overlooking a vast area of flat rice paddies, around two hours from downtown Hanoi, the first of two planned courses at the recently-opened Stone Highland Golf and Resort is a beautiful 18-hole golf course from designed Brian Curley. Numerous elevation changes, cross slopes, lakes and bunkers all combine to present a serious challenge, and as the trees mature you can expect it to toughen up even further.
The northern boundary of the site is 100 metres higher than its lowest point, so a number of holes offer awe-inspriing top-of-the-world views over the vast valley floor. As with many new courses, the landscape feels somewhat sparse at times, but once it matures this course will be something special.
The fairways are a little hard at certain times of the year, meaning iron play can be tricky, but the greens are in great shape and full of tricky breaks and the occasional severe hollow.
The course finishes especially strongly, with the 16th a mid-length par 4 that doglegs left to right and offers sweeping views of the valley floor, culminating in a green that sits behind a slew of bunkers and falls away at the back.
The par-5 18th plays from elevated tees to a bunkered landing area, then slightly uphill to what is one of the most severe greens, featuring a significant dip in the centre. Your approach must be accurate to avoid a three putt here.
