Award-winning Nicklaus-designed course with a memorably water-heavy back nine
The newest of the three excellent courses at the BRG King's Island Golf Resort that lies on the shores of the Dong Mo just 5 minutes from Hanoi, the Kings Course is a superb championship course that was designed by Jack Nicklaus and was named Best Course in Vietnam at the 2020 Asian Golf Awards. More open than its sister courses, its wide fairways play through attractive natural woodland before the course toughens up with a water-heavy back nine.
That's not to say the front nine is a walk in the park, as intricate bunker complexes present a challenge on more holes. The par-5 2nd features no less than 13 sand traps as its undulating fairway zigzags through the trees, with one bunker dead centre of the fairway in the landing zone for your second shot.
There's even more sand at the 3rd, a long par 4 that includes a green and accompanying pot bunker that were no doubt inspired by the "Road Hole" at St Andrews, while the spectacular par-4 4th features a creek bisecting the fairway and running up the right side of the fairway to a green that sits next to an attractive waterfall.
Dead centre of the green is the only safe spot to aim for at the pretty par-3 that follows, where there's water from tee to green and a trio of bunkers surrounding the putting surface, while the 8th is a zigzagging par-5 requiring a tough approach over the lake that intrudes into the fairway.
The front nine ends with a par-4 offering two routes to the green; if you're long off the tee, you can play to the right portion of the fairway, thereby avoiding the two water carries required by those playing to the left, from which angle two menacing greenside bunkers come into play.
There's water both sides of the par-5 11th, which also features three large bunkers running across the fairway, blocking your view of your second shot, and while the green at the right-angled dogleg par-4 12th is theoretically reachable for those long off the tee, you're best off playing around the lake and contending with the numerous bunkers instead.
The 14th is one of the most attractive holes on the course, a short par-3 that plays to a peninsula green surrounded by bunkers, while the 15th requires two mighty blows that flirt with the water that runs all the way up the right if you want to reach the green in regulation.
There's time for one more tough par-3, the 17th, which features water from tee to green, bunkers to the right and an awkward valley to the left, while the last is an unusual par-5 that features two right angles, each with a cluster of bunkers at the corner, and water both sides. It's hard to resist taking on the green in two, but you'll need to be very long off the tee to stand a chance.
There's actually one final hole, designed to settle bets or just add one more memory to the bank. The 19th is a par-3 that plays to what is effectively an island green in the shape of a clover, with a trio of bunkers and a three-tier putting surface to contend with.
The clubhouse features everything you would expect from a golf resort of this calibre, including an excellent restaurant and a bar. In addition to golf, there's the opportunity to go sailing and fishing on Dong Mo Lake or swim in the club’s Olympic-sized swimming pool.
